MUNICIPAL RESIDENCES FOR YOUTH AND STUDENTS

As Residências Municipais para estudantes e jovens em Carcavelos foram projetadas com o objetivo de promover a integração social e o contacto humano num ambiente pleno em vegetação e com ótima exposição solar, tirando partido da ampla e verde envolvente paisagística.
O edifício organiza-se em torno de um Pátio Ajardinado, centro da vida social das residências. De acesso controlado para residentes e convidados, conforma uma zona de lazer que dá acesso à maioria das unidades habitacionais (apartamentos e residências de estudantes), possibilitando e estimulando a interação e a formação de laços sociais entre moradores.
Propõe-se uma frente de estabelecimentos comerciais relacionada com o jardim público pré-existente, incluindo cafés com esplanada, de forma a incrementar a dinâmica social local.
Para dar continuidade visual e ecológica ao jardim pré-existente, maximizar a exposição solar e proporcionar vistas desde o pátio ajardinado até ao distante oceano, o número de pisos do edifício é reduzido gradualmente de Norte para Sul, gerando uma série de terraços ajardinados. Por contraste, nas frentes de rua a Norte, as cérceas são alinhadas com os edifícios adjacentes e as fachadas têm um caráter austero, integrando naturalmente o edifício no seu contexto.
A organização funcional deriva da relação do edifício com a envolvente: as residências de estudantes e as tipologias maiores usufruem dos terraços ajardinados; as tipologias duplex encontram-se na zona Norte, contendo varandas com floreiras verdejantes relacionadas com o pátio ajardinado e, na fachada oposta, janelas sobre as vinhas circundantes; as tipologias de um só piso encontram-se nas zonas de gaveto, com acesso através de átrios semi-exteriores que as conectam com os espaços comuns e garantem a ventilação transversal.
Propõem-se estratégias bioclimáticas para redução do consumo energético do edifício: aproveitamento da energia solar para aquecimento de água e produção de eletricidade; estratégias passivas como sombreamento dos vãos Sul através de varandas, isolamento térmico e ventilação transversal em todas as habitações; reaproveitamento de águas pluviais para rega e de águas cinzentas para autoclismos; utilização de vegetação autóctone e de baixo consumo hídrico.
Concebida com a preocupação de se compor como espaço de encontro e familiaridade em estreita relação com a natureza, a proposta visa gerar uma comunidade coesa de jovens residentes.

The Municipal Residences for youth and students in Carcavelos were designed with the objective of promoting social integration and human contact in an environment full of vegetation and with optimal sun exposure, taking advantage of the wide and green landscape surroundings.
The building is organized around a Landscaped Patio, the center of the social life of the residences. With controlled access for residents and guests, it is a leisure area that gives access to most of the residential units (apartments and student residences), enabling and stimulating interaction and the formation of social ties among residents.
Related with the pre-existing public garden, a front of commercial establishments is proposed, including cafes with esplanade in order to increase the local social dynamics.
To provide visual and ecological continuity to the pre-existing garden, maximize solar exposure and provide views from the courtyard to the distant ocean, the building’s number of floors is gradually reduced from north to south, generating a series of landscaped terraces. In contrast, on the northern street fronts, the building´s height is aligned with the adjacent buildings and the facades have an austere character, naturally integrating the building in its context.
The functional organization derives from the building’s relationship with its surroundings: the student residences and the larger typologies take advantage of the terraced gardens; the duplexes are located in the northern part of the building, having balconies with verdant flower beds related to the patio and, on the opposite façade, windows that open to the surrounding vineyards; the single-story typologies are located in the corner areas, with access through semi-exterior atriums that connect them with the common spaces and guarantee cross ventilation.
Bioclimatic strategies are included to reduce energy consumption: the use of solar energy for water heating and electricity production; passive strategies such as shading of the southern windows through balconies; thermal insulation and transversal ventilation in all dwellings; the reuse of rainwater for irrigation and greywater for flushing; the use of autochthonous and low water consumption vegetation.
Conceived with the concern of creating a space for familiarity in close relationship with nature, the proposal aims to generate a cohesive community of young residents.
