Este projecto visa responder a três problemas fundamentais da Cidade Universitária de Lisboa: a falta de vida e a insegurança nocturna do seu espaço urbano; a escassez de lugares de encontro entre alunos de faculdades distintas; a inexistência de uma residência de estudantes dentro do pólo. Propõe-se um lugar unificador e simbólico que complemente os actuais edifícios de uso comum (reitoria e cantinas), colmatando a falta de espaços comunitários na Universidade.
A integração de uma Residência de Estudantes, dos Serviços de Acção Social da Universidade de Lisboa, de Espaços de Estudo, Salas Polivalentes (para ensaios de tunas e aulas extracurriculares, entre outras actividades), um Estacionamento Público (que substitui aquele que hoje existe no local de implantação do edifício) e Comércio num único edifício permite gerar encontros diversos entre utentes da UL, assim como entre estes e a população em geral. Esta multiplicidade de funções é controlada através da gradação do nível de privacidade dos espaços (desde o mais público até ao mais privado) e da qualificação dos espaços de transição que os interligam.
Criaram-se 3 zonas com cunhos distintos:
Praça – local público de encontro entre utentes e não utentes da universidade;
Edifício Multifuncional – que serve exclusivamente alunos, professores e funcionários da universidade;
Corredores e pátios da residência de estudantes – apenas acessíveis aos seus habitantes e convidados.
Foi dada especial importância ao desenho dos corredores de acesso a salas e quartos, aqui entendidos como ruas interiores (salas de estar comunitárias onde existem zonas de estadia), e à qualificação das antecâmaras dos quartos, pensadas enquanto lugares de expressão da individualidade (nelas, os habitantes poderão expor objectos pessoais, que serão visíveis desde a rua interior através de uma janela). Desta forma, estimulam-se as relações de vizinhança e os laços sociais.

This project aims to respond to three fundamental problems of the University City of Lisbon: the lack of life and nighttime insecurity of its urban space; the scarcity of meeting places for students from different faculties; the inexistence of a student residence within the pole. A unifying and symbolic place is proposed that complements the current buildings for common use (rectory and canteens), making up for the lack of community spaces at the University.
The integration of a Students' Residence, the University of Lisbon's Social Services, Study Spaces, Multipurpose Halls (for the rehearsal of musical groups and extracurricular classes, among other activities), a Public Car Park (which replaces the one that currently exists on the site of the building) and Commerce in a single building will enable various meetings to take place between the users of the UL, as well as between them and the population in general. This multiplicity of functions is controlled through the gradation of the privacy level of the spaces (from the most public to the most private) and the qualification of the transition spaces that connect them.
Three zones with distinct features were created:
Square - a public meeting place for users and non-users of the university;
Multifunctional Building - which serves exclusively students, teachers and employees of the university;
Corridors and courtyards of the student residence - only accessible to its inhabitants and guests.
Special importance was given to the design of the corridors giving access to rooms and bedrooms, here understood as interior streets (communal living rooms where there are zones of stay), and to the qualification of the antechambers of the rooms, thought as places of expression of individuality (in them, the inhabitants can expose personal objects, which will be visible from the interior street through a window). In this way, neighbourly relations and social ties are stimulated.
