Em 2017, os incêndios de Pedrógão Grande constituíram uma tragédia nacional em Portugal, tendo destruído uma ampla área de paisagem e vitimado mortalmente 66 pessoas. A Casa Daniel Starling foi uma das construções totalmente destruídas no incêndio.
No contexto de um programa de voluntariado para auxílio às vítimas dos incêndios, o projeto de reabilitação desta casa foi realizado com o intuito de devolver ao Daniel o seu próprio teto.
A casa original era inteiramente construída em pedra e a sua estrutura interna ficou totalmente destruída. No entanto, as paredes exteriores permaneceram praticamente intactas, tendo-se optado por manter e recuperar o muro exterior de pedra original, implantando no seu interior a nova moradia totalmente branca, contrastando com a pedra existente.
A casa desenvolve-se em torno de um pátio exterior para refeições, estadias ou encontros sociais e inclui um terraço elevado aberto à paisagem, onde se pode apreciar a natureza envolvente.
No interior, a sala/cozinha é o espaço mais qualificado: inclui uma parede de pedra original, luz zenital, teto em duas águas e uma relação privilegiada com o pátio. A faixa colorida ao nível do olhar contrasta com o teto branco que reflete a luz zenital proveniente da janela superior prevista do lado Norte.
Aberta na espessa parede de pedra antiga, a janela quadrangular do quarto pontua a fachada exterior e confere um carácter íntimo ao espaço de dormir, com vista para a vegetação envolvente.
Foram previstas duas fases de construção: a primeira, construída, inclui a sala/cozinha, o quarto e a instalação sanitária; a segunda prevê um quarto extra e zona de estúdio. Apenas a primeira fase foi edificada.

In 2017, the Pedrógão Grande fires were a national tragedy in Portugal, having destroyed a large area of landscape and fatally killed 66 people. Daniel Starling’s House was one of the buildings destroyed in the fire. In the context of a volunteer program to help the victims of the fires, this house’s rehabilitation project was carried out in order to give Daniel back his own roof.
The original house was entirely built of stone and its internal structure was totally destroyed. However, the external walls that encircle the plot remained practically intact, so I opted to maintain and recover them and implant a new white house inside it, visually contrasting with the existing stone textures and colour.
The house develops around an external patio for meals or social gatherings and includes an elevated terrace open to the landscape, where one can enjoy the surrounding nature.
Inside, the living room/kitchen is the most qualified space, including a gable roof and a privileged relationship with the patio. The colored and stone strip at eye level contrasts with the white ceiling that reflects the zenithal light coming from the upper window on the north side.
Opened in the thick old stone wall, the square shaped bedroom window punctuates the North façade and gives an intimate character to the sleeping space, overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Two construction phases were planned: the first one includes the living room/kitchen, the bedroom and a bathroom; the second one foresees an extra bedroom and studio area. Only the first phase was built.
